Husband has lost his ability to speak due to cancer. He wants something like a tablet he can write on to communicate as opposed to typing it is more natural for him to write. What products are out there than can help this effort. Thinking of having him write in real time and have it appear on the tv screen or my apple computer desktop??

Yes, the Apple iPad can load .jpg, etc image files and show as a slideshow.

The App store has numerous graphics and photography apps, some free, and some $2-$9.
As shipped, the Apple iPad can do it with no additional software.
If you want to plug in your memory card, there is an adapter.

Quoting Apple:

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable. Or you can use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from the camera’s SD card.

Check this page for photos of the Apple iPad Camera Connection kit and dock : http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs
